The landscape of information is rapidly shifting as new demands are increasing investment in digital technologies. Yet, critical scholars continue to demonstrate how many technologies are shaped by and infused with values that are not impartial, disembodied, or lacking positionality. Technologies hold racial, gender, and class politics. In this talk, Dr. Safiya Noble will discuss her book, Algorithms of Oppression, and the impact of technology on the public.
Dr. Safiya Umoja Noble is an Associate Professor at UCLA in the Department of Information Studies. She is Co-Director of the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry, also known as C2i2, with her friend and colleague Dr. Sarah T. Roberts. The Center recently announced the launch of the Minderoo Initiative on Technology and Power; this new initiative will critically investigate the social impact of digital technologies on communities and the broader public good.
