Event Details
Astronomy on Tap is a nation-wide phenomenon where professional astronomers give informal talks in local bars on a variety of scientific topics followed by lots of discussion and interaction with the public. Here in Los Angeles, we at Caltech are spearheading this effort in collaboration with researchers from UCLA, Carnegie, The Planetary Society, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (operated by Caltech for NASA).
We meet one Monday a month at Der Wolfskopf, a German beer bar in Old Town Pasadena. Each event consists of two 10-15 minute talks on some aspect of astronomy/astrophysics with broad appeal. In the intermission between talks, the scientists present roam around the bar, interacting with members of the public, and answering questions. Additionally, there is an astronomy quiz ongoing throughout on the screens, with cool astrophysics and NASA prizes for those interested. Our host bar, Der Wolfskopf offers attendees special Astronomy on Tap happy hour prices on a variety of food and drink items throughout our event.
Overall, these events last about two hours, but feel free to come and go as you please. Doors open three hours before our starting time, so if you want a good seat, we recommend getting there a little early. No reservations are necessary, you can just show up. Despite this being held at a bar, the management has given us the OK for minors to attend.
