AI and automated decision making systems are becoming more prominent in our lives and without much oversight, transparency or accountability. Governments, agencies and private companies use them in relation to predictive policing, school admissions, health decisions, welfare or benefit eligibility, immigration, criminal risk, housing, recruitment and credit scoring.
What are the principles that guide AI to make decisions? Can algorithms always make good decisions? How about fair decisions? There are many hidden ethical issues behind the automated decision making system. The program discusses the implications of bias in data science & AI systems, and the importance of ethical decisions in developing and implementing these algorithms.
Week Number and Topic
Week 1: Overview
Week 2: Data Privacy and Power
Week 3: Explainability, Accountability and Trust
Week 4: What kind of harm can biased systems cause? When can you introduce bias into an AI system? What are some of the best practices to avoid it?
Week 5: AI Literate Citizen
Week 6: Disinformation
- Gain a conceptual understanding of the implications of bias in AI systems and topics within AI ethics discussions
- Understand the importance of diversity and ethical decisions on the individual and social justice
- Have an elevated discussion on how to design, use or question the AI-powered systems within an ethical framework
- Apply these concepts to case studies of biased systems
This program is for those interested in ethical AI, from enthusiasts and advocates to practitioners. No previous knowledge is needed as long as participants are willing to appreciate diversity of perspectives and think critically about impacts of decisions on individuals and society.
This 6 week program is designed to start with concepts first and then move to actual case studies / real world applications of these concepts.
Attendees will be provided with either short reports / videos for each class. They can read / watch ahead of the class or after the class (in other words materials can be used as either pre/post work).
The live session will allow for discussion of concepts and cases

Research Methods and Data Science Meetup
This Research Methods and Data Science (RMDS) meetup group is devoted to make big data & AI useful, and to promote big data technologies. It is a meet-up group bringing together people from research methodology, data science, data professional services, AI and computing in the greater Los Angeles area.
The focus of the group is about utilizing big data & AI technologies to improve data analytics & research for social good, and to promote research methods and data science innovation. On a regular base, we run workshops on big data analytics that can be applied to model and visualize open data and other complicated big data sets. Also, we will organize special meetings to discuss special data science projects, as well as data science automation and augmentation.
