Caltech Astronomers Have Created a Simulation of Our Galaxy in a Supercomputer

Astronomers have created the most detailed computer simulation to date of our Milky Way galaxy’s formation, from its inception billions of years ago as a loose assemblage of matter to its present-day state as a massive, spiral disk of stars. The simulation solves a decades-old mystery surrounding the tiny galaxies that swarm around the outside of our much larger Milky Way. READ MORE

JPL's Juno Successfully Completes Jupiter Flyby on Saturday

Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Juno mission successfully executed its first of 36 orbital flybys of Jupiter on Saturday. The time of closest approach with the gas-giant world was 6:44 a.m. when Juno passed about 2,600 miles (4,200 kilometers) above Jupiter’s swirling clouds. At the time, Juno was traveling at 130,000 mph (208,000 kilometers per hour) with respect to the planet. READ MORE
